Teeth can last a lifetime if simple steps are taken from an early age to avoid problems of tooth decay.

COMMON PROBLEMS

  • Tender and bleeding gums
  • Constant ache or pain in tooth
  • Sensitivity to heat or cold

TREATMENT AT HOME

  • Sensitivity – use a special desensitising toothpaste
  • Toothache – take simple painkillers
  • If the problem continues see your dentist

PREVENT TOOTH PROBLEMS BY:

  • Regular tooth brushing
  • Reducing the amount of sugary food and drinks in the diet
  • Having regular dental check ups

CHILDREN

  • Should have their first dental check as soon as possible – even before all the teeth are through
  • As soon as teeth appear parents should brush their children’s teeth until the child is at least seven years old when the child can start brushing their own teeth

VISITING YOUR DENTIST

You should not be deterred from having regular checks because of cost. An inspection by your dentist is inexpensive and likely to prevent more costly restorative work at a later date through neglect. The following groups do not pay at all: children under 18 or under 19 and in full-time education, ladies during pregnancy and also in the first year following delivery. There are also certain categories of people on low income who will not be charged and you should ask your dentist for details. No-one pays for treatment to stop bleeding or for repairs to dentures.
